About Us
Touch of Clay was founded by Malaysian ceramic artist Cheah Yeow Seng. From 1976, he helped out at Kuala Lumpur College of Art (KLCA) in Subang with ceramic production works. During then, he was pursuing his Diploma in Accounting. However, at that time, he knew that all he wanted was to pursue a ceramics course - which his Asian parents deemed a career that 'does not make much'. He worked in accountancy for 2 years before deciding that it was not for him and made a big decision to pursue the art of ceramics.
He started in 1979 and graduated from Kuala Lumpur College of Art (KLCA) in 1984. From 1985, he taught students as a pottery assistant and then moved on to being a ceramic lecturer in KLCA. Since then, he has created hundreds of artisan pottery pieces and has had many exhibitions both locally and internationally. Many of his works are inspired by the human body, architecture, nature, flora and fauna as well as other forms of inspiration. This in turn allows him to ruminate on how to sculpt the earth into the fine art of ceramics.
"I want my work to speak for itself. If you have your own way to decipher it, go ahead because that is what art should be about." Cheah Yeow Seng wants people to interpret his art in their own ways without him imposing his views on them. This way, he can make his artwork theirs as much as it is his. It also gives more meaning to the work made.
Incorporating various techniques and materials he has gained over time, he opened up his own pottery studio in year 2000 in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur. He hopes that the future generation will continue to create art and not forget the importance of it in society.
His daughter Thea Cheah Jia Hui has joined in his endeavours with her own project called My Random Pots (MRP.), with smaller scale works incorporating the same ideas as her father.
